An underground storage tank system (UST) is a tank and any underground piping connected to the tank that has at least 10 percent of its combined volume underground. Federal regulations apply to underground tanks and piping storing either petroleum or certain hazardous substances. In addition, the NJDEP has adopted a number of regulations which dictate how USTs are to be managed. The process includes investigation, closure and in some cases, remediation.
